Sweet Pongal

Special dish which is made during the Tamil festival of pongal. However, it's quite filling and can be enjoyed otherwise too.

Ingredients

  1. 1 Cup Rice
  2. ½ Cup Green Gram
  3. 1 Cup Milk
  4. 3 Cups Jaggery
  5. 4 Tablespoons Ghee
  6. 2 Tablespoons Cashewnuts
  7. 2 Tablespoons Raisins
  8. 5 Cardamom (powdered)
  9. 2 Cloves (powdered)
  10. 1/2 Teaspoon Cinnamon (powdered)
  11. 1 Nutmeg (powdered)
  12. 2 1/2 Cups Water

Method

    Cook rice and green gram in milk and water.

    In a saucepan, put jaggery and pour the water. Heat it and let the jaggery melt in the water.

    If there are any impurities, remove them and continue heating the jaggery syrup. Heat it till it's a little sticky.

    Add the cooked rice and dal to jaggery. Add the powdered cardamom, cinnamon, nutmeg and clove. Mix all thoroughly.

    Heat the ghee and fry the cashews and raisins in it. Add it to the pongal.

    Switch off the heat and serve the sweet pongal hot or cold.
