Kurukku Kaalan

Kaalan is a very tasty side dish for rice which is prepared out of curd, coconut, plantain and yam. It is an integral part of a Kerala sadya(feast). The recipe am listing down is for the thick version of Kaalan, also known as Kurukku Kaalan.

Ingredients

  1. 1 Plantain Raw
  2. 250 Grams Yam
  3. 1/2 Cup Yogurt
  4. 3/4 Cup Coconut Grated
  5. 3 Green Chillies
  6. 1 Teaspoon Cumin
  7. 2 Chillies Red
  8. 1 Teaspoon Mustard Seeds
  9. 1 Teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  10. 1 Teaspoon Fenugreek Powder
  11. 1 Teaspoon Pepper powder
  12. Salt
  13. Curry Leaves
  14. 1 Teaspoon Ghee

    Strain yogurt by using a muslin cloth and keep it aside.

    Add pepper powder to water. To this add yam pieces, raw plantain pieces, curry leaves, green chilies, turmeric powder and salt.

    When the vegetables are cooked and the mixture is dry, add ghee to it and roast it well.

    Grind grated coconut, cumin seeds and green chilies to a fine mixture. Add curd and coconut mixture to the vegetables and stir well till it is thick.

    Add fenugreek powder to it.

    Heat oil in a pan and add mustard seeds to it. When the mustard seeds splutter, add red chillies and curry leaves to it and roast. Add this seasoning to the kaalan and mix well.
