Oat Upma

Having oats is a perfectly healthy way to start your day. Can even be a great  hot snacks.

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup Oats
  2. 1 Onion chopped (medium sized)
  3. 2 Green chillies chilli / broken red dried
  4. 4 - 5 Curry leaves
  5. 1/2 tsp Chana dal
  6. 1/2 tsp Urad dal
  7. 1/4 tsp Mustard seeds
  8. 1/4 tsp Cumin seeds
  9. pinch Hing
  10. 1 tbsp Oil
  11. 1.5 tbsps Peanuts (roasted)
  12. pinch Turmeric powder
  13. to taste Salt
  14. 1/2 tsp Lemon juice
  15. 1 Tomato lemon small  (finely chopped) skip if you use
  16. Corriander leaves   for garnish
  17. 1 tbsp coconut Grated as you desire (optional)
  18. 1/4 tsp Ginger chopped (optional)

Method

    Add Photo

    Roast oats for about 5 - 10 minutes in a wide pan on a medium flame until it turns light brown. Set this aside to cool. This helps to remove the husky smell.

    Heat a pan with oil. Add the following:  Mustard seeds, cumin seeds, peanuts - preferably broken, chana and urad dal and fry till golden.

    Add Hing, Ginger, Chili, Curry leaves and fry till the leaves turn crisp

    Add onions and fry till they turn transparent. Meanwhile, rinse the oats in a colander under running water and drain up the entire water.

    Once the onions are well fried add turmeric. If you prefer to use tomato you can add it now and fry till it turns mushy and reduce the flame to low.

    Add the rinsed oats, sprinkle salt. mix well. Cover and cook for about 6 to 7 minutes. stirring occasionally till fully cooked.

    If needed you can sprinkle little water, if you want it to be mushy.

    Add grated coconut, coriander leaves and lemon juice. Mix well and serve.
