Beef Ularthiyathu

Kerala style beef fry.



4 serving
  1. 500 grams Beef, cut into small cubes
  2. For Marination
  3. 1/4 cup Shallot, halved
  4. 1 tablespoon Ginger, crushed
  5. 1 tablespoon Garlic, crushed
  6. 1 1/2 teaspoons Chilli powder
  7. 1 1/2 teaspoons Coriander powder
  8. 1 teaspoon Fennel seeds, roasted and crushed
  9. 1/4 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  10. 1/4 cup Coconut pieces, roasted
  11. 1/2 teaspoon Vinegar
  12. to taste Salt
  13. For Frying
  14. 1/2 teaspoon Mustard seed
  15. 1 1/4 cups Onion, sliced
  16. 1 teaspoon Garam masala
  17. as required Pepper powder
  18. 2 sprigs Curry leaves
  19. Coconut oil for sauting


  1. Marinate the beef cubes with all the ingredients listed under 'for marination'. Let it stand for 15 minutes.

  2. Pressure cook the marinated beef till it is done. (No need to add any water as the water content in the beef is enough to get it cooked).

  3. Heat oil in a large pan and splutter the mustard seeds. Add onion, curry leaves and saute till the onion starts to brown. Add the cooked beef, garam masala and pepper powder, stir well until the gravy is completely dry and becomes dark in color.

  4. Serve with rice, chapathi, appam etc.
