Home Made Sambar Masala

Sambar is the most popular and common dish found across the southern part of India. I had never bought Readymade Sambar Masala so I never made Sambar for a long time even after many years of settling in Southern India. Then one fine day, I made a decision of making Sambar powder for myself and then doing Sambar for first time. That’s when the below recipe of Sambar powder was done and it is a perfect combination of spices to get a perfect Sambar.

  1. 1 cup Urad Dal
  2. 1 cup Chana Dal
  3. 1 cup Coriander seeds
  4. ½ cup Fenugreek (Methi seeds)
  5. 4 tbsps Cumin seeds
  6. 5 tbsps Mustard seeds
  7. 18 – 20 nos Cardamom Green
  8. 18 – 20 nos Cloves
  9. 5 tbsps Coconut powder (Optional)
  10. 50 gms Chilies Dried Red (I have used Kashmiri Red )
  11. 1 tsp Hing (Asafoetida)


  1. Add Photo

    Dry roast Red Chilies till it turns dark but should not burn.

  2. Add Photo

    Slightly roast the coconut powder till it gets golden.

  3. Add Photo

    Roast All the Dals, Methi, Cumin, Mustard, Cardamom, Cloves and Coriander well till it turns golden brown and you get a nice aroma.  Do not overbrown or burn.

  4. Add Photo

    Mix together all the above roasted ingredients and add hing to it.

  5. Add Photo

    Grind to fine powder

  6. Change

    Store it in an airtight container for upto 4 months.
