Sambar

NOTE:- Addition of water to sambar can be increased or decreased according to thinness required

Ingredients

  1. 1 cup Tur dal (yellow lentil)
  2. 1 Drumstick
  3. 2 Brinjal medium (sliced or chopped)
  4. 1 Radish small (sliced)
  5. ½ cup Pumpkin chopped
  6. 1 Onion medium chopped
  7. 2 Tomatoes medium (chopped)
  8. 3 tbsps masala Sambar (I use my home made sambar )
  9. ½ tsp Turmeric
  10. ½ tsp Fenugreek seeds (methi)
  11. 1 tsp seeds Mustards
  12. Curry leaves
  13. 3 - 4 chilies Whole red
  14. a big pinch Hing (asafoetida)
  15. 3 tbsps Tamarind pulp (you can add more if prefered)
  16. 2 tbsps Coriander leaves chopped
  17. Salt as per taste
  18. 3 tbsps Oil
  19. 4 cups Water

Method

  1. Blank step

    Boil dal with 2 cups of water till done

    In a pan, heat oil, add mustard seeds, methi seeds, allow it to splutter

    Add curry leaves, hing and dried red chilies

    Add onion, fry for a minute, add drumsticks, brinjal, radish, pumpkin and fry for few minutes

    Add tomatoes, turmeric, sambar powder, cover and cook for 3-4 minutes

    Add boiled dal, 2 cups of water, salt and simmer till vegetables are done and give nice aroma of sambar

    Finally add tamarind pulp and coriander leaves, simmer for another 6-8 minutes

    Tasty sambar is ready to be served with hot steamed rice, dosa, idlies, medu vadas and so on…
