Fast-track Fish Curry

this is a fish curry recipe for when you have very little time on hand... it uses canned sardines in tomato sauce... now canned foods in general are not too big on taste, and canned sardines are DEFINITELY something of an acquired taste... but this is an easy, convenient and fuss-free recipe... so give it a try...

  1. 2 cans sardines tomato sauce in (425g each)
  2. 1 red onion , diced
  3. 1 green chilli , slit
  4. 4 cloves garlic , julienned
  5. 1 inch ginger piece , julienned
  6. 8 curry leaves
  7. 1/4 Teaspoon mustard seeds
  8. 1/4 Teaspoon turmeric powder
  9. 1 Teaspoon red chilli powder
  10. to taste salt
  11. oil as needed

  1. Add Photo

    In a kadhai, heat the oil and add the mustard seeds.

  2. Add Photo

    When the mustard seeds begin to splutter, add in the curry leaves, ginger and garlic.

    Toss them around for a minute, then add the green chilli and onion.

  4. Add Photo

    When the onion turns translucent, add the turmeric and red chilli powder.

    Cook it off till the powdered spices lose their raw smell.

    Add the canned sardines (be gentle with them, they can break easily). mix everything well.

    Reduce the heat to a simmer and let the gravy cook for about 10 minutes (till slightly thickened).

    Check for seasoning, and add salt only if required (canned sardines usually have quite a bit of salt in them already).

    Serve with rotis.
