How To Concoct A Mulakushyam/Moloshyam

My MIL enjoyed cooking and had a superb hand with food. This simple dish, that she taught me how to make, has become a family staple. It's easy to make and quick and a top family comfort food.

Gita Madhu

6 servings
  1. 1 cup toovar dal
  2. 1 cup yellow pumpkin
  3. handful curry leaves
  4. 1 green chili
  5. pinch haldi
  6. pinch asafoetida
  7. 1 teaspoon chili powder

20 mins
  1. Wash the dal well. Soak it if you like to speed up cooking - I don't

  2. Add about a cup of water to the dal and cook it in a pressure cooker for about 2-3 whistles. The point is to cook it but not quite -it should be three-fourths done

  3. Peel the pumpkin and slit the green chili

  4. Chop the pumpkin

  5. Open the pressure cooker and add salt, haldi, chilli powder, hing,

  6. Chopped pumpkin and green chili and subject the lot to a few more whistles

  7. When the pressure cooker is ready to open, add curry leaves to the moloshyam

  8. Serve hot, drizzled with coconut oil with hot rice and papads and a side dish of some dry fried root vegetable
