My MIL enjoyed cooking and had a superb hand with food. This simple dish, that she taught me how to make, has become a family staple. It's easy to make and quick and a top family comfort food.

Ingredients

6 servings
  1. 1 cup toovar dal
  2. 1 cup yellow pumpkin
  3. handful curry leaves
  4. 1 green chili
  5. pinch haldi
  6. pinch asafoetida
  7. 1 teaspoon chili powder

  1. Wash the dal well. Soak it if you like to speed up cooking - I don't

  2. Add about a cup of water to the dal and cook it in a pressure cooker for about 2-3 whistles. The point is to cook it but not quite -it should be three-fourths done
