Fried Cabbage With Ham

Bacon is traditionally used in this dish, but I rarely have it on hand. You can use ham steaks, leftover baked ham, or even lunch meat from the deli. This goes great with pork chops, corned beef, smoked sausage, etc. Don't be afraid of overfilling the pan, it will shrink down considerably as it cooks.

Ingredients

35 mins
  1. 2 tbsp cooking oil
  2. 1 tbsp butter
  3. 1 large onion, roughly chopped
  4. 2 cups diced ham
  5. 1 large head of cabbage, cored and roughly chopped
  6. 1 tbsp minced garlic
  7. 1 tsp salt, or to taste
  8. 1/4 tsp black pepper, or to taste
  9. 1/4 cup chicken broth or water

Cooking Instructions

  1. 1

In a large skillet, heat oil and butter over medium heat.

  2. 2

Add onion and cook for about 2 minutes. Add garlic and cook for an additional minute.

  3. 3

Add ham and cook until browned, about 5-7 minutes. Stir frequently to prevent garlic from burning.

  4. 4

Add cabbage, salt and pepper and cook for 5-7 minutes until it begins to soften, stirring occasionally.

  5. 5

Add chicken broth or water. Reduce heat and simmer, covered, about 15 minutes or until cabbage is tender.

  6. 6

Remove lid and cook an additional 5 minutes or until liquid has evaporated and cabbage is lightly browned and caramelized. Add additional salt and pepper if needed and serve.
